Capturing the Magic of Northland Light

Whangarei has a quiet kind of magic — the way the sun spills across the hills in the morning, or melts into the horizon over the harbour at night. As a Northland photographer, I get to chase that light almost every day, and it never feels the same twice.

People often ask where the best photo spots are around Whangarei, or when the light is at its best. It depends on the season, the weather, and what kind of feeling you want in your images. But there are a few locations that consistently deliver the soft, glowing Northland atmosphere that has become my signature.

Sunset Sessions: Northland’s Golden Hour Glow

The sunsets here are something special. Northland’s coastline faces in so many directions that you can catch the light fading across both the sea and the land — a dream for portrait sessions.

At Ruakaka Beach, the sky stretches wide and low. In summer, the sun drops behind the dunes, painting everything with peach and honey tones. Morning light there is equally stunning — soft, crisp, and perfect for families who love a clean, airy feel to their photos.

Wellington’s Bay / Whangāumu Bay has its own charm, Whangāumu Bay is a quiet, sheltered spot with character at every end. One side is lined with gentle waves and a small, rocky area that forms natural little pools — perfect for candid family or lifestyle shots close to the water. On the other end, a scenic cliffside walk leads up to elevated viewpoints, where you can capture sweeping landscapes of the bay and the opposite shoreline. The mix of beach, rocks, and dramatic vantage points makes it a versatile location for photography, offering both intimate, close-up moments and grand, panoramic compositions.Every beach has its own rhythm with tides, wind, and sun, and that’s part of why photographing here never gets old.

Pātaua Bay is another favourite — rolling hills and countryside light meet the coastline, creating beautiful golden hour tones and wide, open spaces perfect for family or engagement sessions.

A Photographer Based in Whangarei

Being based in Whangarei means I can plan sessions around the light, the tides, and the weather patterns unique to Northland. Whether it’s a sunrise family shoot at the beach, an engagement session in the hills, or a branding shoot surrounded by fields and native bush, I tailor each session to the season and the story we’re telling.

Why the Light Matters

Light isn’t just technical — it’s emotional. The golden glow before sunset softens everything; it adds warmth, calm, and connection. That’s why I usually schedule outdoor sessions for early morning or late evening. When the light is right, the images feel alive — not just bright, but full of mood.
