Beautiful Places to Visit in Whangārei for Stunning Photos
Whangārei is such a gem for photographers — every direction you turn, there’s another breathtaking view or hidden pocket of light waiting to be found. I spend a lot of time exploring locations around our region for my sessions, and I’ve come to know which spots shine best depending on the light and time of year. Whether you’re planning a family shoot, an engagement session, or just love exploring with your camera, here are some of my favourite photo-worthy locations around Whangārei.
Whangārei Falls
You can’t beat Whangārei Falls for classic waterfall beauty. It’s easy to reach, and the track offers plenty of angles to capture both the power and stillness of the falls. I love it early in the morning when the light is soft and misty — everything feels calm and timeless. You can find walk details and access info here https://www.wdc.govt.nz/Community/Parks-and-recreation/Parks-and-reserves/Otuihau-Whangarei-Falls.
Pātaua (North & South)
If you love wide skies and calm reflections, Pātaua is pure magic. The bridge linking Pātaua North and South makes a lovely photo spot at sunrise, and the sand dunes catch the first light beautifully. It’s one of those places that feels completely peaceful, especially in the early morning.
Ruakākā Beach
This is one of my go-to locations for family sessions. The light here is beautiful year-round, and the dunes create a natural frame that glows golden before sunset. It’s perfect for photos that feel both relaxed and full of movement — kids can run, explore, and just be themselves.
Ngunguru & the Tutukākā Coast
Ngunguru’s calm estuary has a beautiful simplicity to it, while the Tutukākā Coast (and nearby bays like Matapōuri and Whale Bay) are full of bold colour and texture. The contrast of turquoise water and deep green bush makes every image pop. You can explore more about these coastal spots here https://www.whangareinz.com/Discover/Destinations/Tutukaka-coast
Glenbervie Forest
Just minutes from town, Glenbervie is my pick for soft, dreamy forest light. The tall pines filter the sun in all the right ways, and it works beautifully for families or couples who want something natural and quiet. In the late afternoon, the light spills through the trees perfectly.
Mount Parihaka Lookout
For sweeping views of Whangārei, head up to the Mount Parihaka lookout. It’s a beautiful spot for sunrise or sunset — you can see the harbour, the city, and the rolling hills all at once. It’s also a nice place to stop and take in how lucky we are to live somewhere this beautiful.
A Little Insider Tip
When you’re planning a shoot, think about light first — beaches and open spaces shine best during golden hour (the hour before sunset), while shaded forest areas are more forgiving any time of day. Each season brings something different too: golden tones in autumn, bright greens in spring, and long, glowing evenings through summer.
Whangārei has a way of surprising you — every time I revisit a spot, the light changes just enough to make it feel new again. Whether you’re visiting or you call this place home, take your time to explore, slow down, and see how the light transforms the landscape around you. That’s where the magic happens.
